  • Graduate level learning material about the challenges of human reproductive medicine in a changing Europe

    About the course ...

    There is no standardised teaching material on the Ob/Gyn subject in Europe for graduate medical students. Instead, each medical university decides which relevant parts of the subject are included in the teaching. The syllabus is based mostly on the EBCOG (European Board & College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) recommendations and on textbooks. The graduate medical student training focuses on basic anatomy, physiological processes of conception, normal pregnancy and labour, and on pathophysiological conditions. As a result, it lacks the ability to provide an overview of the challenging fields of obstetrics and gynaecology and fails to put reproductive medicine into the context of the socioeconomic changes of Europe. Filling this gap, we will create a course designed for graduate medical students.

    1. Pre-pregnancy care and pregnancies related to minority ethnic groups

    2. Infections in pregnancy

    3. Preterm birth and premature rupture of the membrane

    4. Adolescent pregnancy (social and age related challenges) prepregnancy and

    pregnancy care

    5. The issue of infertility in Reproductive Medicine: A Medical and 

    (Inter)Cultural Perspective

    6. The interplay of reproductive technologies and social transformations

    7. Regulations of ART accross Europe and their effect

    8. Endometriosis- Cultural differences in pain expression and 

    communication

    9. Preconceptional and pregnancy care of women with autoimmune diseases

    10. Special Challenges of Twin Pregnancies

    11. Challenges of the ultrasound examinations during pregnancy

    12. Challenges of genetic counsellingy_advanced

    13. Pregnancy with substance abuse, women on the margins of the society

    14. Weight related comorbidities in pregnancies, the role of the obesity epidemic

    The course will be completed by detailed syllabuses to establish the structure of the e-learning materials. This syllabus will be designed to develop core competencies in human reproductive medicine.

    Elements of innovation and expected impact:

    COHRICE will contribute to overcome a deficit in the education of graduate students by the creation of a freely available e-learning material. This will facilitate the global understanding of human reproduction. As a result, future medical doctors will be better prepared for challenges anywhere in Europe. 

    Expected impact:

    The course will contribute to the improvement of the education of graduate medical students and to motivate them to become specialists in obstetricians and gynaecologists in the future. Moreover, the course aims to shift the focus of graduate students toward the special challenges of human reproduction and thus increase the live birth rates in Europe. The secondary aim is to sensitise students to social aspects of our changing Europe. We also aim to strengthen the collaboration between the partner universities and facilitate future cooperation in the field of human reproductive medicine.

    Transferability potential:

    The graduate level of the e-material will be disseminated in European universities; however, it can also have an impact beyond the borders of Europe thanks to international students studying at the partner universities, who will make use of this knowledge upon return to their home countries.


    The material will be integrated into the graduate education of medical students and serve as an optional course worth 1 ECTS in the 10th semester after the completion of the obstetrics exam in UP and UMFST (note that all optional courses are allowed to have a maximum value of 1 ECTS). MUV has an independent pathway to approve optional courses for medical students based on strict quality control from its teaching department. PR1 will be the subject of this quality control at MUV, and if approved, will be part of the curriculum as an optional course.
